What is KYC and Why is it Important?

Know Your Customer (KYC) is a foundational telecom best practice that helps Communications Service Providers (CSPs) verify who is allowed to originate traffic on their networks. As regulators focus more closely on caller identity, number use and robocall mitigation, KYC gives CSPs a stronger way to assess customers before service is enabled and continues throughout their relationship.
KYC helps CSPs confirm customer legitimacy, reduce exposure to high-risk originators and create a clearer link between the sender, the customer, the number and the call. That visibility supports stronger compliance, more effective traceback and better protection against bad actors using legitimate network access to impersonate trusted organizations.
Beyond regulatory alignment, KYC is good business. It helps CSPs protect network truthfulness, ensure customer vetting and build the trust foundation needed for call authentication, branded calling and enterprise voice security. Most importantly, consumers benefit when CSPs make it harder for scammers to enter the voice ecosystem in the first place.
