What is KYUP and Why is it Important?
August 13, 2026
Know Your Upstream Provider (KYUP) is a telecom industry practice that requires Communications Service Providers (CSPs) to verify, monitor and understand where the traffic from their upstream providers. As regulators increase their focus on combating illegal robocalls and voice fraud, KYUP is emerging as a critical layer of defense alongside caller authentication frameworks such as STIR/SHAKEN.
KYUP requires CSPs to identify risky companies that are sending voice traffic, monitor and detect suspicious traffic patterns and prevent bad actors from exploiting gaps in the voice ecosystem. By strengthening oversight of upstream connections, CSPs can reduce fraud exposure, support traceback efforts and improve trust in voice communications.
Beyond compliance, KYUP is good business. Industry frameworks increasingly view KYUP, along with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Know Your Traffic (KYT), as foundational best practices for protecting networks and maintaining consumer trust.
Most importantly, consumers benefit. When CSPs know who is delivering traffic to their networks, it becomes more difficult for scammers to inject fraudulent and spoofed calls into the call path. The result is fewer unwanted calls, stronger fraud prevention and a more trusted communications experience. Combined with analytics, authentication and reputation intelligence, KYUP plays an important role in helping restore confidence for consumers in answering the phone.
