Why Customers No Longer Trust Caller ID
July 16, 2026
Trust in caller ID is declining as impersonation scams become more common and more sophisticated. Today, more than half of consumers know someone who has lost money in an impersonation scam and over a third have experienced it themselves. As a result, customer behavior has shifted significantly. Today, many people avoid answering calls from unknown or unverified numbers by default, even when the call may be legitimate.
This shift is largely driven by the rise of caller ID spoofing. Fraudsters can easily falsify phone numbers to impersonate trusted enterprises, making it difficult for customers to distinguish between real and fraudulent calls. While caller authentication frameworks such as STIR/SHAKEN have improved trust in voice communications, gaps in coverage, inconsistent adoption and evolving fraud tactics mean that caller ID alone is no longer a fully reliable indicator of identity.
For enterprises and consumers, this creates a growing challenge. Even legitimate, time-sensitive calls are at risk of being ignored, leading to lower answer rates, missed opportunities and reduced engagement. As trust in caller identity continues to erode, enterprises must find ways to restore confidence in outbound communications or risk losing effectiveness in one of their most important customer channels. Spoof Protection helps restore that confidence by preventing impersonation of enterprise phone numbers and allowing customers to trust the calls they receive.
